The northern lights are weather, not a show. You need dark skies, clear weather and patience, in that order.

## Getting there

Fly to Reykjavik between September and March and drive away from the city lights.

## Where to stay

A farm guesthouse with a wake-up call when the lights appear.

## What I would do differently

I would stay five nights. We saw them on the fourth.
