Fjords by kayak: a beginner's week

A week of paddling in western Norway with no experience, a guide and a lot of waterfalls.

I had never sat in a kayak before this trip. A week later I was paddling under waterfalls in a fjord narrower than some streets.

Getting there

Fly to Bergen, then take the bus and ferry to Flåm or Gudvangen, where most guided trips start.

Where to stay

We slept in tents on small beaches, with one night in a wooden cabin to dry everything.

What I would do differently

I would pack a dry bag for the phone. The fjord is calm; the waves from passing ferries are not.
