Boats among the limestone islands of Ha Long Bay

Two nights on Ha Long Bay

A junk boat, a few thousand limestone islands and the quiet bays further east.

Ha Long Bay is one of the most visited places in Vietnam, and most boats follow the same route. Choose a longer cruise and you leave them behind on the first afternoon.

Getting there

Shuttle buses run from Hanoi in about three hours. Most cruises include the transfer.

Where to stay

Pick a two-night cruise that sails into Lan Ha Bay. Smaller boats, quieter bays, better swimming.

What I would do differently

I would kayak at sunrise rather than at noon. The water is flat and the light is softer.
