The quiet side of Bali

Far from the beach clubs: rice terraces, lake temples and villages where mornings are slow.

Bali has a loud side and a quiet one. The quiet one starts about an hour inland, where the roads climb and the air cools down.

Getting there

Skip the south coast and head straight to Munduk or Sidemen. A driver for the day costs less than you think.

Where to stay

Small family guesthouses with four or five rooms, breakfast included and a view over the terraces.

What I would do differently

I would stay longer in one place. Bali rewards slow mornings more than long day trips.
