Lago di Braies at sunrise

A Dolomites lake at dawn, a wooden boat and the quietest trail in South Tyrol.

By eight in the morning, Lago di Braies belongs to the tour buses. At six, it belongs to the ducks, a few photographers and whoever rented the first boat.

Getting there

The lake is a short bus ride from Dobbiaco station. In summer the road is closed to cars from mid-morning, so plan to arrive early or by bus.

Where to stay

Sleep in the valley, in Braies or Villabassa, and walk to the shore before sunrise.

What I would do differently

I would walk the full loop around the lake before taking the boat. The far shore is calm and almost empty.
