How I pack for three weeks with one carry-on

The exact list, the bag I use, and the five things I stopped bringing.

For three years I travelled with a 40-litre bag and a small day pack. Not because it is a rule, but because carrying less means walking more, taking the bus instead of a taxi and never waiting at a baggage belt.

The bag

Pick a bag that opens like a suitcase, not from the top. You will pack and unpack it a hundred times; a long zip saves a minute every morning.

The list

  • Four tops, two of them merino
  • Two pairs of trousers, one pair of shorts
  • One warm layer and one rain shell
  • Walking shoes and light sandals
  • A small wash bag, a scarf, a cap
Pack for one week and plan one laundry stop. Three weeks is just one week, three times.

What I stopped bringing

A second pair of shoes, a hairdryer, a towel, a guidebook and the "just in case" jumper. I have never missed any of them.

🧭
Weigh the bag before you leave. If it is over eight kilos, take one thing out.
