Ten ways to spend less on the road

Simple habits that cut my travel costs by a third, without sleeping in airports.

Most of the money on a trip goes on three things: getting there, sleeping and eating out. Small changes to each add up quickly.

Getting there

Book flights on a weekday, fly into smaller airports and use night trains when they replace a night of accommodation.

Where to stay

Stay a week in one place instead of moving every two days. Weekly rates are often a third cheaper, and you save on transport too.

What I would do differently

I would track expenses from day one. You cannot cut what you do not see.

Prices in this guide are what I paid. They move every season, so use them as a rough guide.
